The 2nd International Scientific Conference on Imam Ḥussein(PBUH): “The Ḥusseini Epic, the Enlightened Path of Religiosity and Freedom”
SAMT Department of Public Relations reported that coinciding with the blessed birthday of Imam Ḥussein(PBUH), The 2nd International Scientific Conference on Imam Ḥussein(PBUH) entitled “The Ḥusseini Epic, the Enlightened Path of Religiosity and Freedom” was held in SAMT’s Conference Hall on February 2, 2025. This 1-day scientific event began with a message from the Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi.
Dr. Shalchi, the Cultural and Social Deputy of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, introduced SAMT as one of the important and influential institutions in the Iranian higher education system and said:
The topic of the conference is very important, not only because of the high position of Imam Ḥussein(PBUH) in the religion of Islam, but also because of the role he has played in the cultural and social life of the people. Since the past 500 years, Imam Ḥussein(PBUH) has been considered a precious capital in the political, social and cultural spheres of Iran, and the presence of this capital has enabled Iranians to overcome many social and political difficulties and challenges, the latest example of which can be seen in the Islamic Revolution of Iran, where the Iranian people were able to establish the Islamic Revolution by relying on this great capital. He said: Imam Ḥussein(PBUH) is a common heritage for Iran and its neighbors, including Iraq, and it is the duty of academics and intellectuals of both countries to introduce the dimensions of this common cultural capital to the society.
Dr. Mahdavizadegan, the head of SAMT organization, appreciated the supporters of this scientific event, especially the Cultural and Social Deputy of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and the Municipality of Tehran. Then, explaining the meaning of "epic", he said:
Epic is a self-sacrificing struggle with lofty and transcendent goals; it is inspiring and enlightening for all God-seeking and pure-hearted freedom-oriented people, just as the world today needs a pure, sacred epic that is a messenger of the prosperity of human society, the superiority of divine and moral values, a defender of the oppressed, the downtrodden of the world and the front of resistance and liberation movements, and also a delineator of the true path of the institution of human knowledge and understanding that are all evident and clear in the Ḥusseini epic.
Dr. Fatḥollahi, the Scientific Secretary of the conference, said in his report:
During this period, numerous articles were received by the secretariat from Iraq, India, Pakistan, Egypt, and Iran, some of which were selected after scientific evaluations to be presented on the day of the conference (partly in person and partly virtually). In the statements of the Supreme Leader, "revelation" is a continuous matter, and the Islamic Revolution of Iran and the current resistance movement in the Islamic world are an expression of the prophetic mission. The truth of Imam Ḥussein(PBUH) has a place that introduces the prophetic mission into the body of the Islamic society and realizes the mood of uprising in societies.
Another speaker was Ḥujjatul Islam Dr. Abbasi (The head of Al-Mustafa International University) who said:
No one has rejected the virtues and moral qualities of Imam Ḥussein(PBUH); Shiites and Sunnis agree on this, but the point that is relevant to us today and also stated in the title of the present event is “freedom”, including fighting against the oppressors. Imam Ḥussein(PBUH) sacrificed his life and that of his loved ones in fighting against the oppressors and did not consider expediency in any way. Today, an unjust and oppressive system rules the world and those who stand against this system are called rebels, evils and the axis of evil. However, these people want to maintain their dignity and nobility. Today, it is necessary to introduce this characteristic of Imam Ḥussein(PBUH) to the world.
The closing speaker of the first part of the event was Dr. Lubna Khamis Mahdi, the Director General of the Department of Scientific R&D of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Iraq. She thanked for holding this scientific event, and expressed her hope that Iran-Iraq joint scientific will continue to be more extensive than ever.
In the continuation of the event, researchers presented their papers.
Then, Ayatollah Abbas Ka‘bi-Nasab, a board member of the Assembly of Experts, delivered the closing speech of this scientific event, saying:
We are in the era of great victories of resistance and the victory of blood over the sword; the founder of this path is Hazrat Sayyid al-Shohada, Imam Ḥussein(PBUH). The modern Islamic civilization has three pillars: (1) genuine Ijtihad in accordance with the requirements of the time, (2) science and technology and efforts to advance science and conquer the frontiers of knowledge, and (3) “resistance”; if we want to shape the modern Islamic civilization, we must implement these three elements in society. The third civilization-building element, that is resistance, requires us to have military, defensive, and security deterrence power, which, thanks God, today the deterrence power of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been formed based on the culture of Ashura, Ḥusseini resistance, and the presence of the Ḥusseini leader. This requires that the discussion of the Ḥusseini resistance be included in our textbooks (including school and university textbooks) so that future generations can become familiar with this life-giving element.
At the end of the event, the representative of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Iraq, Dr. Lubna Khamis Mahdi (the Director General of the Scientific R&D Department), and the representative of Islamic Culture & Relations Organization of Iran in Baghdad, Dr. Najafi (the Director of the Scientific and Academic Department), were appreciated for their cooperation in organizing the conference. The event's badge was also awarded to those who presented their papers in person.
