Persian Art History in Islamic Period: Miniature

This book is the first volume of the national research program on “The history of Iranian art in the Islamic period”. In this investigation, the art of Iranian Miniature painting (Negargari) is analyzed in an historical process from the Seljukian period to the end of the Qajarids. The schools of Iranian miniature painting are usually classified according to the cities, miniature painters or the ruling periods of kings. In this book the classification is based on the ruling period of kings and in each period the schools of various cities such as Herat, Shiraz, Mashhad and Isfahan are studied.
The method of the book is based on the analysis of the history and schools of Miniature painting which mainly attends with an outward attitude to the aesthetic aspects in the process of history. There is a strong affinity between the art of Miniature painting and the art of illustration employed in manuscripts.
