Phonetics: The Scientific Study of Speech
Phonetics is the science of studying language sounds from three perspectives: articulatory, acoustics, and auditory. Phonetics is the basis of phonology and is used in other fields of linguistics such as historical-comparative linguistics, dialectology, computer linguistics, applied linguistics, and clinical linguistics. In this book, we get acquainted with the principles of Phonetic transcription, the main topics of articulatory phonology, and the general topics of acoustic phonology and auditory phonology. Part of the book is dedicated to the linguistic units of syllables and prosodic morphology, i.e., length, pause, stress, tone, and intonation. MA students of linguistics and related fields are the main audience of this book, but the book has been tried to be written in simple language to be useful for all those who are interested in phonological topics.
