The Science of Eloquence and the Inimitability of the Quran
The word of the Quran is the most elevated of all. Not only is the Quran the word of the God but it also carries and contains spiritual concepts that the relation between the Creator and His creation depends on. It is the best guide for our worldly life and ensures our salvation in the other world. Therefore one reason that makes us endeavor in the field of Rhetoric and prompts its learning as necessary is that the Holy Book has drawn the attention of the entire human world to itself and has been the centre of discussion in many scientific, literary, and religious fields. Yet the most widely discussed characteristic of the Quran is its Rhetoric. To understand the depth of its meaning and recognize its Rhetoric, which adds to its miraculous quality, one cannot ignore the Techniques of Rhetoric.
When the Quran was revealed to the prophet, it was sent among a people who were known fo in Rhetoric. This suffices to attest to the Miracle of the Quran that this people when faced with the divine words of the Quran, with all their skills in the techniques of Rhetoric and methods of oratory, found themselves paralyzed before it.
The book is organized into four sections and sixteen chapters. The first section is allotted to the discussion of “Eloquence” (Elm Badi’). The second part of the book titled “the Science of Semantics” the following topics are introduced: speech and its kinds, composition, the state of the predicate, the state of the subject, clauses and adverbs, elements of verbs, conjunctions and disjunctions, concision, circumlocution, and parallelism. The third part addresses the subject of “Rhetoric”. In this part simile, metaphor, metonymy and irony are discussed. The fourth chapter deals with “the figures of speech”. In this part issues concerning speech ornamentation and meaning
embellishment are brought up.
At the end of each chapter there are questions to be pondered upon as an exercise.
Considered as the main textbook for the BA students of theology for the course “Rhetoric”, this book studies the miraculous rhetoric of the Quran.
