Because the Persian Gulf, this shallow waterway, is situated in the central part of the Middle East, which has been historically important throughout ages, the study of its political and social transformations and that of its neighboring countries require meticulous attention. Around this gulf are also situated some strategically important lands like Mesopotamia, the Persian plateau and the Arabian Peninsula. Therefore, the events in these areas influence the political and social atmosphere of this gulf. And consequently any metamorphosis in the Persian Gulf affects the three areas of land around it.
Studying the history of the Persian Gulf means reviewing the history of the Mesopotamian civilizations (Sumer, Akkad, Assyria, Babel) the Persian Plateau (Elam, ancient and Islamic Iran), the Arabian Peninsula (history before and after the beginning of Islam, and the dynasty of the Umayyads and the Abbasids) and Asia Minor (Ottoman Empire).
The book is organized in seventeen chapters: the Geography of the Persian Gulf, the Persian Gulf in the Ancient Period, the Transformations of the Persian Gulf in the Achamenian Period, the transformations in the Persian Gulf from the attack of Alexander to Iran until the Sassanid period, the Transformations of the Persian Gulf in the Sassanid period, Trade in the Persian Gulf in the Early centuries of the Islamic Period, the Economic and Political Transformations in the Ale-buyids’ Period, the Political and Economic Transformations of the Persian Gulf from the fifth to the eighth centuries, the Political and Economic Transformations of the Persian Gulf from the eighth century to the Infiltration of the Portuguese into the Orient, the Persian Gulf at the time of the presence of the Portuguese, the Transformations of the Persian Gulf in the eleventh century, the Transformations of the Persian Gulf from the conquest of the Hormuz Strait to the downfall of Isfahan, the Persian Gulf at the time of the Afsharids and the Zandids, the Political and Economic Transformations of the Persian Gulf in the first half of the Qajarids, the Persian Gulf in the second half of the Qajarids, the issue of the Persian Gulf during the first Pahlavi king, an overview of the major transformations in the Persian Gulf after the second world war to the Islamic Revolution.
